SWOT Assessment
A SWOT Assessment is one of the simplist strategic assessment processes. In one form or another it is also used in nearly every strategic planning session as a data development activity to explore options for the future. It is often used as the basis for creating strategic goals.
A SWOT analysis provides a framework for dealing with complex situations in a limited amount of time. SWOT analysis is one of the most useful tools in organizational planning. It provides the structure to recognize and then capitalize on the strengths of an organization and minimize or eliminate the organizations weaknesses. The SWOT also provides structure to and explore and examine opportunities and recognize and avoid or elimination threats.
We have described the SWOT in the article titled SWOT Analysis and can be viewed in our DBoK Article Archive. Because the SWOT is a basic assessment tool it can be combined with other activities to create unique assessments. An excellent example of this is our TOWS Matrix.
There are times when clients call and request our help in doing this specifically. When the SWOT is used as a part of the data collection package for full strategic planning we recommend keeping it simple. If we are asked to do it as a stand alone activity we will explore using one of the alternatives like the TOWS Matrix because it adds a level of detail that leads to action where the simple SWOT does not.
