Strategic Planning
Methods to Match Our Clients Needs

Strategic Planning is one of our principle competencies. We have been delivering consulting and facilitation services for strategic planning to our clients since 1992. Because our clients are as diverse as they can be, we are never satisfied that we have the "one best way" to conduct strategic planning. Even for clients we serve year after year, the methods we use adapt to their ever changing needs. Because of this we have developed several strategic planning methods primarily based on two adaptive factors: focus and complexity. In addition, we create and add optional activities to help a client focus on specific things they want or need to do.

Below is a simple description of several methods we have developed. If you want to learn more about any method click on the "Learn more..." following the description or click on the item listed to the right under "Custom Solutions for..."

Total Strategic Planning (TSP) - (for Government Agencies) is our most complex methodology. The focus is derived from the factors that government agencies must consider in developing their strategic plans. It considers how planning must meet specific elements of public law (GPRA/Results Act, CFOA, etc…) and the purpose for which an agency exists. It is designed to be completed over a 3 to 5 month timeframe.

Values-Based Strategic Planning (V-BSP) - Considering what we have seen with the absence of ethical and moral behavior in organizations over the past few years, it’s no wonder there is a growing movement toward planning based on establishing and promoting the organization's Value-Base. DLCG is in the forefront of this movement with the (V-BSP) Model. The focus of this method is to advance a healthy values-based work environment. We help you uncover your workplace and business values and advance these values to align with purpose-driven goals to create a successful plan. The complexity of the model is, therefore, moderately high.

Practical Strategic Planning (PSP) – Where simplicity is desired and the time to get a plan done is limited, and where cost is a major consideration that may have kept a group from doing strategic planning, we have developed the highly adaptable Practical Strategic Planning approach. This streamlined process at last brings strategic planning within the range of nearly any group or organization. The focus of this methodology is to minimize cost and time investments while engaging a group to create a more long-term focus.

Personal Strategic Planning (PrSP) – Strategic Planning for the individual? Absolutely! Why do you think so many peoples lives are off balance and suffering? PrSP is a doorway to creating and living a focused and balanced life of one’s choosing. We deliver this to small groups or as part of an individual coaching program.

In addition to these more comprehensive approaches, we have also been asked to assist organizations and groups with strategy related elements of strategic planning. These include:

Action Planning - Translating plans into actionable items with assignments and schedules. This is an excellent starting point for change & results management. We use a highly articipative technique that helps a group determine how the direction or major initiatives for the group, community, or organization will be acted upon. As an example, the result is can be an annual implementation plan with semi-annual action plans for each strategy. It is used when a strategy has been determined and an implementation and action plan is needed to channel the groups energy and efforts.

Summits - Designing and conducting medium to large group sessions around selected issues to gather intelligence from experts and specific ideas from attendees using round robin and other facilitation tools. Participant facilitators can be trained to assist in multiple breakout groups.

Focus Groups – In large organizations it is not only difficult but impractical to engage the entire workforce, managers and leaders in the planning team. We use Focus Groups regularly to give a voice of the leadership and workforce in an organizations strategic planning efforts. This is sometimes very helpful in small organizations as well.

The focus group begins with a survey and questionnaire where respondents rate the organization in 30 areas and answering two questions. With the responses in hand we ask the participants to share and discuss their responses. Responses are compiled by the facilitator and a graph is constructed to show how the organization rates in each of the 30 areas.

This is only one use of Focus Groups, yet, it is very specialized and can be very powerful. This can also be presented to show the divergence/convergence between leadership/management and the workforce.
