Process Mapping
A process map is a graphic representation of a process; using flow-charting symbols, that shows the sequence of activities and tasks. It may include or lead to information pertinent to a particular point in the process called Business Rules.
Process Maps are used to base-line processes for process improvement efforts or business process reengineering (BPR). The map is used to identify measurement points and priorities for a process. When a process is painful, the map can point to where the pain is and how to fix it.
Despite recent moves to avoid mapping, the first rule should always be to understand your process and how it meets, or doesn’t meet, your customer’s needs. If no process map exists, how can you know where your process is failing so you can improve or reengineer it?
DLCG facilitators have been doing process mapping for many years. Our Mapping Methodologies always consider the broader picture, Process Management, as evident in the model above. Our methods combine the use of ISO-9000 documentation requirements with Deployment Flow diagrams for coordinated documentation. We call our methodology the Effective Mapping Technology. We begin our process with a leadership team meeting identifying significant processes and chartering a mapping team. Our procedures result in up to six outputs, as required: Process Maps, Business Rules, Process Procedures and Policies, Process Metrics, and Opportunities for Improvements. Of course working toward each output takes time. Our standard process focuses on three outputs, Process Maps, Procedures and Metrics.
