"ICE" Problem Solving
The ICE Problem Solving methodology is one of several that DLCG Facilitators and Consultants use with client groups to create better options and get to defined and sustainable actions to solve perplexing problems. Ice is an acroynm that reflects three problem solving elements that are missed by most groups in their hast to get to action. ICE stands for Impact of the problem, Criteria for success, and Evaluating the options.
Of course ICE is just 3 steps of a 7 step method. The entire method is:
- Identify Issue: or define the problem.
- Discuss Impact: We believe the problem definition should move another step to examine the real impact. This let's us know what the fix needs to effect.
- Establish Criteria: Determine the factors that are used to assess the proposed options against.
- Explore Options: Based on the problem and the impact, what options may lead to a solution.
- Evaluate Options: With options identified it’s time to evaluate them against the selected criteria.
- Make Decisions: What option are we going to implement?
- Take Action: What actions need to take place to implement the decision?
The ICE Problem Solving Method is simple yet complete. It can be used as part of a discussion framework such as F.E.M.A. or a Focused Conversation. This methodology can be used as a structure of a problem solving meeting or as an element of a problem solving activity in a larger, more complex, meeting.
